Irish golfer Graeme McDowell is out in front in a 15-week social media campaign involving 12 golfers striving to raise $125,000 for their chosen charity. Called RBC’s Golf for Kids programme (#RBCGolf4Kids), the campaign is driven by one of McDowell’s sponsors – Royal Bank of Canada. McDowell’s chosen chairty is the Children’s Medical & Research Foundation, the fund-raising arm of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin and The National Children’s Research Centre. The number of autistic students entering the private and public school systems has skyrocketed over the last ten years, prompting the CDC to do a full study on how having autistic children in the classroom changes the dynamics. Teachers who are not well prepared can feel frustrated or overwhelmed. Administrators can also feel frustration or the sense of being overwhelmed for different reasons, as it is estimated that the cost of just one autistic child in the school system can cost $25,000-$100,000 more than a non-autistic child for a single school year. Ireland is set to become the first country in the European Union to introduce legislation on plain packaging for tobacco products. The Government has approved the publication of the Public Health (Standardised Packaging of Tobacco) Bill 2014 and the presentation of the Bill in the Seanad. “Ireland will be the first country in the European Union to introduce such legislation and the third country worldwide,” said  Minister for Health James Reilly. “Australia introduced plain packaging legislation in November 2011 and the New Zealand Bill had its first reading in Parliament on 11 February this year. Limerick students achieve third place at CanSat competition in Norway

A team of secondary school students from Limerick City have won third place at a European Space Agency competition in Norway. The Crescent College Comprehensive team joined students from 14 countries across Europe in the competition to build a CanSat – a simulation of a real satellite integrated within the volume of a soft drinks can – which was then launched by rocket to a height of 1km. The test for teams was to include all the major subsystems found in a satellite, such as power, sensors and a communication system. The Irish Stock Exchange (ISE) has reported pre-tax profits of €7.2m for 2013, a 15pc increase on 2012. Revenues were 12pc higher at €22.9m. The increase was driven by strong growth in primary markets business (in particular from listing debt securities), where revenues grew 17pc to €15.4m and accounted for 67pc of total ISE revenues. Primary markets business relates to international debt, fund and equity listings. At the end of December 2013 the ISE had approximately 30,000 securities from 4,000 issuers in 78 countries listing their securities on its markets. Outgoing CEO of Bord Iascaigh Mhara Jason Whooley is to head up Bio-marine Ingredients Ireland (BII) in Killybegs, Co Donegal from next September.
