Irish consumer sentiment hits three-year high
Irish consumer sentiment hit a three-year high during June, a closely watched indicator has shown. The KBC Ireland/ESRI Consumer Sentiment Index rose to 67.9 this month, which is its highest level since October 2007. This compares to a figure of 65.3 in May and to the index’s all-time low of 39.6 in July 2008. Vodafone has said that while it is in discussions with music rights holders, it is still too early to confirm that it will implement the ‘three strikes and you’re out’ rule as applied by Eircom against illegal file-sharers. A new survey of Irish accountants conducted in the past week has shown that almost 60pc believe the minimum wage is making Irish business uncompetitive. The survey, carried out by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland (CPA), questioned more than 500 accountants employed in accountancy practices and across a wide range of industries throughout the country, with almost 85pc of those questioned working in SMEs. Apple CEO Steve Jobs has denied that the iPhone and iPod maker Foxconn is a sweatshop. Jobs made his comments in an on-stage interview at the D8 technology conference in California. In his first public comments on the spate of recent suicides at Foxconn’s factory in southern China, the Apple CEO described them as “very troubling” and said Apple was “all over this”.
