Ireland on track to meet 2020 renewables target with wind, says IWEA
Some 142 MW of new wind generation capacity has been installed in Ireland so far this year, representing a total investment of €225m, according to new figures from the Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA). Speaking on Global Wind Day, which is marked internationally today, “Through the delivery of wind energy we remain on track to meet our 2020 renewable electricity targets, but it’s essential that policy makers maintain a stable policy environment to allow Ireland to continue to harness this home-grown Irish electricity and reap the considerable economic and social benefits we’ll gain from that,” said Kenneth Matthews CEO of IWEA . Irish surface technology company Enbio has secured a 500,000 contract with the European Space Agency (ESA). The contract will enable the company to optimise a proprietary surface treatment for use as a ‘sunscreen’ to better protect satellites as they travel in space. The contract will also allow Enbio to establish its first manufacturing facility at its headquarters at NovaUCD. The contract was secured with support from Enterprise Ireland, the co-ordinating body for ESA in Ireland. While the company had said there would be 950 job losses last year, under 550 are now to be made redundant. It is also creating 220 new jobs in claims insurance and direct sales in Galway. Six-fold increase in number of direct selling parties in Ireland Irish business activity levels have improved further through the summer months to push the KBC Bank Ireland /Chartered Accountants Ireland Business Sentiment Index to its strongest levels since the survey began in late 2006. The improvement was broadly based, with all sectors reporting an improvement in business conditions and all the components of the index stronger than in the second quarter. The survey rose to 124.8 in the third quarter of 2014 from 121.8 in the previous three-month period.
