Betfair shares soar on IPO
An ex-professional gambler and former City trader are set to make at least £211m from an initial public offering (IPO) of their 10-year-old company Betfair. On its stock market debut Betfair was valued at £1.4bn. Andrew Black and Edward Wray founded the online bookmakers and both sold around a million shares in the flotation, worth between £14 million and £17 million. They still own more than 20pc of the business. Shares in Betfair were quoted at 1,542 pence at midday, a premium of close to 19pc on the IPO price. Ireland ranks as the number one global destination for jobs by inward investment per capita, according to IBM’s Global Location Trends Report. The new survey reveals Ireland is placed ahead of other leading Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) locations including Singapore, Hungary and the Czech Republic. About 170 jobs per 100,000 citizens were created as a result of foreign businesses investing here, according to the report. Despite the recession and dire state of the public finances, Ireland has moved up one place to ninth for estimated total jobs in research and development. Just over half of mobile phone owners (51pc) in the UK, or 23 million people, are now using their devices for mobile commerce – whether it’s making payments, redeeming coupons or researching products and services – according to new research from the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB). The study also found that smartphone users are 63pc more likely to engage with m-commerce than all users.
