In a statement released today, the European Commission confirmed that it had sent a Statement of Objections under EU anti-trust rules to a number of companies that supply LCD panels, concerning their alleged participation in a cartel in violation of EU rules on restrictive business practices.
Philips Electronics confirmed to the Financial Times that it had received a Statement of Objections due to its status as a former shareholder of LG Display, and that this did not mean it was directly involved.
LG Display told the FT that it was reviewing the statement further, but offered no further comment.
LCD panels are mainly used in displays for mobile telephones, portable music players (MP3) and digital cameras, monitors for notebook and personal computers, and televisions.
A Statement of Objections is a formal step in Commission anti-trust investigations in which the Commission informs the parties concerned in writing of the accusations raised against them. The company can reply in writing, setting out all the facts in its defence, or request an oral hearing.
According to the Commission, sending a Statement of Objections does not prejudge the final outcome of the procedure.
