Sunday Times, Star titles score in UK ABC figures

The only national daily newspaper title in the UK to register an increase in year-on-year circulation was The Daily Star, according to the newspaper ABC data released today.

Circulation at the tabloid increased by just over 20pc for the year, to an average 887,106 copies per day. The title’s sister paper, The Daily Star Sunday, was also up, by 6.6pc to 414,533

The Sun remained the most popular daily title with a circulation of 3,121,407, which represented a slight fall of 0.4pc year-on-year. The next most popular title was the Daily Mail, with 2,178,640 copies, down just over 4pc.

The biggest fall in circulation was recorded by INM’s The Independent, which saw a 19.67pc drop over the year, to 189,013. There was also bad news for the Independent on Sunday, which recorded a drop of 19.98pc to 160,395 copies.

The Financial Times was down 6.13pc to 397,600, The Times fell by 5.15pc, The Guardian was down 2.71pc to 328,773 and the Daily Telegraph dropped 4.54pc to 818,937. The Daily Mirror, meanwhile, was down 7.16pc to 1,340,028, while the Daily Mail dropped 4.05pc to 2,178,640.

The only other national title to increase circulation over the year was The Sunday Times, which was up by 2.74pc to an average of 1.19m copies.  Of the other quality Sundays, The Observer was down 7.01pc to 398,330, and the Sunday Telegraph fell by 2.77pc to 602,495.
