Cook Medical announces 16.5m R&D; investment in Limerick

Medical device company Cook Medical is to invest up to €16.5m over the next four years creating highly skilled positions in research and development activities at its Limerick site. The new investment, which is being made with Government support through IDA Ireland, will focus on two key projects. The first involves setting up a state-of-the-art research and development laboratory, which will foster innovation through enhanced collaboration with doctors and clinicians, developing new anatomical models to provide a more realistic environment for product evaluation and testing prior to commercial release. Digitary initiative first to go live in UK’s ‘Higher Education Cloud’

DCU Invent-based company Digitary has secured funding from the UK government to build a secure document shared service for universities as part of a £12.5m investment under the Universities Modernisation Fund. The initiative will be the first service to go live in the UK’s ‘Higher Education Cloud’ which aims to bring the benefits of cloud computing to universities that have traditionally implemented standalone systems on-campus. More than half of consumers in the United States and Canada regularly use two or more channels before they make a purchase and they expect a consistent experience across all channels, according to a new survey from Oracle. The “ Cross-Channel Commerce: The Consumer View report details the results of a survey of more than 2,000 consumers in the US and Canada regarding their habits and expectations as they shop online, in stores and via mobile phones and tablets. Nearly 20pc of those surveyed said they expect to redeem the same coupons and promotions in stores and online. Beam to buy Cooley Distillery for US$95m

Beam Inc, the company that owns Jim Beam, Courvoisier, Teacher’s and Canadian Club, has entered into an agreement to buy Irish whiskey producer Cooley Distillery for approximately US$95m. Cooley, which was set up in 1987, owns and produces the Kilbeggan, Connemara, Tyrconnell and Greenore brands.  It currently sells approximately 250,000 9-liter cases per year – divided among its brands, private label products and bulk sales to third-party customers – and has production capacity to support substantial future growth. The purchase price is approximately US$95m on a debt-free basis. Beam expects the acquisition to be earnings neutral in 2012 and increasingly accretive moving forward. So far this year, about 160 companies have closed each month, with liquidations accounting for 73pc, receiverships 26pc and examinerships 1pc of the insolvencies, according to figures out from Vision-Net. In the first 11 months of this year, 1,829 companies closed, leaving behind €1.15 billion of debt. This represents five companies closing each day, which is up 20pc on the same period last year. Revival of Sugar Production Would Create 5,000 Jobs Study

The Irish Sugar Beet Bio-Refinery Group has released a feasibility study into the establishment of a bio-refinery plant which it says would create 5,000 jobs and eliminate imports of up to €200m a year. The integrated plant for the production of sugar and ethanol from sugar beet and grain would be located on a new site in the south east, at the centre of the sugar beet growing region. It would cost €350m to build of which around €200m would be spent on Irish services, equipment and expertise. Study shows senior execs keen to be involved in State boards

Irish senior executives are showing a willingness to contribute to economic recovery, with 65pc saying they would participate on a State board, a new survey out today reveals. The study, conducted by Amárach Research on behalf of MERC Partners, revealed that 69pc of respondents believe prospects for the Irish economy are currently more positive than they were this time last year. Only 14pc of those surveyed had a more negative outlook compared to 12 months ago.
