Cabinet to meet over escalated industrial action

09.03.2010
The Cabinet is set to meet today to discuss the plans announced yesterday by public-service trade unions for an escalation in industrial action against the public-sector pay cuts announced in the December Budget.

Following a meeting yesterday, the Public Services Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) announced it was escalating its current industrial action.

This escalation could result in schools facing closure for half days or full days, either on a regional or rolling basis, the INTO said.

Meanwhile, Impact and the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation have indicated that the escalated action could see two-hour rolling work stoppages around the country in the health service.

Civil-service trade unions are also due to meet shortly to discuss escalating industrial action, which could result in government offices and departments being closed for periods of time.
