The Cabinet meets later today to finalise arrangements for the Government’s long-anticipated Budget 2010 in which it is seeking to make savings of some €4bn.
It has been signalled there are likely to be few changes in taxation in Wednesday’s Budget, bar the introduction of a carbon tax.
Cuts are, however, on the agenda. Up to a quarter of a million public-sector workers could have their pay reduced by some 6pc on Wednesday, with higher earners possibly facing larger cuts to their salaries.
The public-sector trade unions have warned of a long and sustained campaign of industrial action if pay cuts are introduced on Wednesday. However, there has been no indication as to what form this action will take, or when it will begin.
Talks between unions and Government on reaching agreement to cut €1.3bn from the public-sector pay bill collapsed last week.
