The number of short-term claimants on the Live Register soared by 70.7pc across the year to October, official figures released today by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) have shown.
According to the CSO figures, this 70.7pc represented 81.1pc of the total increase on the Live Register over the year.
The CSO figures also showed that 78.8pc of all claimants on the Live Register at the end of October were short-term, which was a decrease from 81.6pc in April 2009.
Almost 9pc of all short-term claimants joined the Live Register between the months of April and October, the CSO said.
The CSO figures also showed that the number of long-term claimants increased by 55.7pc (31,281 people) in the year to October, with 53pc of the increase occurring between April and October.
All age groups showed increases in long-term claimants over the six-month period, with the largest percentage increase among the under-20 years age group (+53pc), while those in the 45-54 year age group showed the lowest percentage change (+12pc).
For short-term claimants, the only age group to show a decrease in numbers from March to October was those under the age of 20 years, while the largest percentage increase was among the 60 to 54 age category.
