The innovation or budget portfolios look likely to fall to Ireland’s nominee for the European Commissioner posts, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, when they are allocated by European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, according to reports.
Barroso may announce the allocation of the 25 EU Commissioner posts as early as today.
The key competition portfolio may be given to the current Commissioner responsible for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Joaquín Almunia, while the current Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes may receive the telecommunications portfolio.
The Irish Times reported last week that Geoghegan-Quinn stands to gain a basic annual salary of €238,918 in her new position as European Commissioner, with a range of other allowances also available.
The paper reports Geoghegan-Quinn currently receives an annual salary of €180,000 in her post at the European Court of Auditors.
