310 technology jobs to go in Cork and Sligo

Over 150 jobs in Cork are to be lost as Belgian firm Option Wireless implements a cost-cutting programme while in Sligo a call centre belonging to broadband and phone firm Talk Talk is to shut down with the loss of 160 jobs.
Option Wireless is to cut 150 jobs as part of a cost cutting plan by its Belgian parent. The company’s facility in Kilbarry Industrial Estate will retain only 22 people.
The company is planning to shift its activities to lower cost locations in Asia. The operation in Cork was responsible for putting software onto its communications devices.
Meanwhile in Sligo it has emerged that 160 jobs are to be lost with the closure of the Tiscali call centre, a subsidiary of the Talk Talk phone and broadband brand owned by Carphone Warehouse.
Talk Talk took over the Tiscali facility which began operations in Sligo in 2006 under the name Toucan.
It is understood that the company plans to consolidate its various call centres into ‘centres of excellence’ to better serve customers. Some of the jobs will be transferred to a Talk Talk facility in Waterford.
