UK water regulator Ofwat has come in for some criticism today following its setting of new limits on the prices that water companies in England and Wales can charge for the five years from 1 April 2010.
Ofwat announced that before taking inflation into account, under its new pricing average bills will remain broadly flat for most customers across England and Wales, with the average annual water and sewerage bill moving from £343 to £340 by 2015.
However, the UK’s Consumer Council for Water said while consumers would be relieved to see that their average water bills will largely remain frozen under the new price limits, it is concerned that Ofwat has eased off on water companies’ efficiency targets – causing higher bills for some water customers.
The council said it would give Ofwat a mark of seven out of ten for its decision on price limits.
