Irish retailers are calling on local authorities to give them a 10pc rebate on commercial rates paid in 2009.
The call comes from Retail Ireland, the IBEC group that represents the retail sector, which said today that it wrote to the chairperson of every local authority, as well as to all city and county managers, in November calling for the 10pc rates rebate for 2009 and asking that they suspend any upward revaluations where necessary.
According to Retail Ireland, 30,000 retail jobs have been lost over the past year.
“Local authorities now need to act responsibly and help the retail sector retain employment in view of the threat posed by the collapse in sales, aggravated by cross- border shopping,” said Retail Ireland Director Torlach Denihan.
Denihan also said that the Taoiseach Brian Cowen, along with Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny and Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore, all subscribe to the goal of regaining national competitiveness and that Retail Ireland had sought their support for the rebate measure as it would help to achieve this.
