Friday’s Late Late Toy Show on RTÉ One, the first with Ryan Tubridy at the helm, was the most viewed programme since Nielsen began measuring Republic of Ireland viewership in September 1996.
The programme pulled in an average audience of 1,388,000 people, knocking Gay Byrne's final Late Late Show (1,326,000) in May 1999 off the top spot.
According to Mediaworks / AGB Nielsen, Tubridy's first Late Late Toy Show showed an increase of 16pc on Pat Kenny's final time hosting the seasonal show in 2008 (1,199,000 average viewers).
At its peak, over 1.5 million people tuned in to this year's Late Late Toy Show. According to RTÉ, the show had a reach of 1,980,000 viewers.
RTÉ said the show was the most successful Late Late Toy Show in 15 years: in 1994, the programme attracted an average audience of 1,409,000.
Earlier this month, RTÉ Two’s broadcast of the World Cup play-off match between France and Ireland in Stade de France attracted an average of 1,074,000 viewers which, at the time, made it the most watched programme of the year.
