British Airways (BA) has today confirmed that it is considering a potential merger with Spanish airline Iberia.
Shares in both airlines rose this morning on speculation that a merger was close at hand.
BA issued a statement today in response to the speculation which said that both the BA and Iberia boards were holding separate meetings today to consider a potential transaction.
“However, no decisions have been taken and, at this time, there can be no guarantee that a transaction will be forthcoming.
“A further announcement will be made in due course, if appropriate,” the airline added.
BA and Iberia have been in talks over a merger for over a year.
