A former head of Spanish bank Santander is to face charges of criminal mismanagement of client funds placed with convicted financier Bernard Madoff, the Financial Times has reported.
The FT says it has seen a court document charging Manuel Echeverría, a former head of Optimal, which is the Geneva-based hedge-fund investment arm of Santander.
At the centre of the case against Echeverría lies accusations that he was rewarded with financial commissions as a result of the Madoff investments, despite having misled investors by saying that he had carried out adequate due diligence on Madoff’s operations, the paper reports.
Echeverría is denying the accusations, the financial daily says, noting that he is one of the first and most senior wealth managers known to be facing criminal charges in relation to the Madoff fraud.
