Management at Sligo-based Stiefel Laboratories this morning told its 250 employees that the company, which was taken over by GlaxoSmithkline (GSK) in July 2009, plans to wind up operations by 2013.
In a statement, the company, which produces prescription and over-the-counter skincare products, said the decision was made following a global review of Stiefel’s operations by GSK.
It is understood that the Finiskiln Business Park plant's current production will be transferred to alternative Stiefel facilities.
The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Coughlan TD, expressed her deep disappointment at this morning's announcement.
She said she would immediately engage with the IDA and other state agencies including Enterprise Ireland, FÁS and the local County Enterprise Board on behalf of the workers. She said she would do her utmost for the 250 employees affected.
The IDA is in discussion with the parent company regarding potential opportunities to develop the site in Sligo.
