The Minister for Social and Family Affairs Mary Hanafin TD has said that while social-welfare payments will have to be reduced in the upcoming December Budget, she is attempting to find a way to do this without introducing too much hardship.
Speaking on RTE’s The Frontline programme last night, the Minister (pictured) also indicated there was a possibility that three different bands of child-benefit payments would be introduced in the Budget.
However, the Minister said she was committed to the principle of keeping child benefit universal.
The Minister also noted that while something must be done to protect people on social welfare, she added that equally the protection should not be to the extent that it will prove to be a disincentive for people to work.
