RTÉ Sport has confirmed that it has secured exclusive Irish rights to the UEFA Euro 2012 Championships for television, radio and online broadcast.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) agreement involves 36 countries broadcasting the event extensively on free-to-air television in addition to radio and internet platforms.
Coverage will include the live broadcast of all 31 matches from Poland and Ukraine in summer 2012.
"In an increasingly competitive market we are delighted to bring yet another major international sporting event to Irish viewers free-to-air,” said Glen Killane, group head of sport, RTÉ.
“We are also particularly proud that RTÉ were a part of the EBU team that negotiated this agreement with UEFA. Ireland’s recent playoff against France rated as the third most watched programme of the decade and goes to show the huge public interest in major soccer tournaments such as this.”
RTÉ Sport will broadcast live coverage of the qualifying draw from Warsaw this Sunday 7 February at 11.00am on RTÉ Two and streamed live on RTÉ.ie. Peter Collins will be joined live in studio by former Republic of Ireland Internationals Kenny Cunningham and Matt Holland for reaction on Ireland’s qualification hopes.
