Global consumers spent more than five and half hours on social network sites like Facebook and Twitter in December 2009, up 82pc from December 2008, according to new figures from The Nielsen Company.
Social networks and blogs were the most popular online category when ranked by average time spent in December, followed by online games and instant messaging.
According to Nielsen, with 206.9 million unique visitors, Facebook was the top global social networking destination last month. Some 67pc of global social media users visited the site during the month and spent an average of nearly six hours per month there.
Nielsen’s information is based on data from the US, UK, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain and Italy.
