Davos: Twitter developing anti-censorship tech

28.01.2010
Twitter is looking at adding functionality to its technology to prevent tweets being censored by the Chinese and Iranian governments, said Twitter co-founder Evan Williams at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

"We are partially blocked in China and other places and we were in Iran, as well,” Williams said.

“The most productive way to fight that is not by trying to engage China and other governments whose very being is against what we are about. I am hopeful there are technological ways around these barriers.”

Williams went on to commend Google on how it has responded to recent cyber attacks, as well as ongoing censorship, but added that Twitter itself was too small to carry out the same actions.

Twitter was amongst the several social networks at the forum, including MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn, who had gathered to talk about their business strategy going forward. Twitter was one of few with a specific strategy when confronted with internet censorship.
