Ireland in top three ‘dream destinations’ for American travellers – TripAdvisor survey

Ireland is in the top three ‘dream destinations’ for Americans, according to a new survey released this week by TripAdvisor.

The bi-annual TripBarometer study, conducted by the travel review website, included more than 10,000 US respondents and looked at worldwide travel patterns, as well as the planning and booking habits of travelers at different life stages.

When asked about their dream destinations to visit, the top three for American travelers were Italy, Australia, and Ireland.

“The results of this TripAdvisor survey are good news indeed and confirm our own research that Ireland is high on the wish list for Americans as a dream destination,” said Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland.

“Our strategy is to get Ireland on traveler’s lists of places they want to see. It is our hope that we can effectively reach out to those travelers and people across the United States, who either have family roots in Ireland and who have never visited, or those who have been enchanted by the very idea of setting foot in Ireland. We want to get them to book that trip to Ireland now.

“The people of the United States are one of the most important markets for tourism to the island of Ireland, and 2013 was a banner year for American visitors to Ireland. The number of visitors to our island surpassed our previous best year of 2007. This made us quite pleased. Tourism Ireland in the United States has an extensive program of promotions under way throughout 2014. The focus is to keep the momentum we have built going and continue on with that growth.

“We are spreading the word about the many great experiences that US holidaymakers can enjoy around the island of Ireland, including our newest tourist experience, the Wild Atlantic Way. We are also highlighting the many great festivals we have planned and events taking place in Ireland this year. These include the Limerick City of Culture, next month’s Grande Partenza or ‘Big Start’ of the Giro d’Italia and, of course, the Croke Park Classic, when the University of Central Florida takes on Penn State in their college football season opener next August.”
