London 2012 Olympic torch unveiled

We may get a closer look at it next year when it (hopefully) comes to Dublin but, for now, the organisers of the London 2012 Olympic Games have unveiled their torch design.

The torch will be carried by 8,000 different people over 8,000 miles in just 70 days next year.

The golden torch, created by London-based designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, has 8,000 perforated circles to represent each of the torchbearers, who will be nominated for their inspirational stories.

The relay will begin at Land’s End on May 19, 2012 and the torch will be carried by an average of 110 people a day until it arrives at the Olympic Stadium on July 27 for the lighting of the Cauldron at the Opening Ceremony, signifying the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Chair of the organising committee Sebastian Coe, said, “The torch that carries the Olympic Flame during the Olympic Torch Relay is one of the most recognisable and significant symbols of a Games. Members of the public right across the UK are busy nominating inspiring people to be torchbearers and I am thrilled we have a beautifully designed, engineered and crafted torch for them to carry.”

About 90pc of the torchbearer places will be made available to the public so nominate your Torchbearer at www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay
