Brendan Gleeson nominated for Golden Globe

Irish actor Brendan Gleeson has been nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the HBO/BBC mini-series Into the Storm.

Gleeson’s nomination is in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Made for Television category and marks the second year in a row he has been nominated for a Golden Globe, having been in the running for his role as a hitman with a heart in Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges last year.

The Irish actor has already won an Emmy Award this year for his performance in Into the Storm icon: launch video and will face tough competition for the Golden Globe from Belfast-born actor Kenneth Branagh (Wallander, One Step Behind), Kevin Bacon (Taking Chance), Jeremy Irons (Georgia O'Keeffe) and Chiwetel Eiofor (Endgame).

Irish rock bank U2 are also set to feature in the Golden Globes next year. They have been nominated in the Best Song category for Winter, which features on the soundtrack of the Jim Sheridan film Brothers, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire.
