It has proved to be a very good week for comic-book sellers with a Batman comic last night breaking through the US$1m sales barrier set only a few days ago by a Superman comic.
An issue of Detective Comics #27, which features the debut of the Batman character, sold for a record US$1.075m in an auction in Dallas last night, Heritage Auction Galleries has said.
According to Heritage, the issue of Detective Comics #27 sold last night was the highest-graded, unrestored copy of the comic it had ever auctioned.
When the issue was released with a May 1939 cover date, Superman was the only other superhero on the stands, save for the now-obscure characters of the Arrow and the Crimson Avenger. Batman has been in continuous publication ever since that first comic-book outing, a distinction only Superman shares among comic-book characters.
The news of the record Batman comic book sale comes just days after a rare top-condition copy of Action Comics #1 from 1938, which marked the debut of Superman, sold for US$1m.
Back in the late 1930s, both Detective Comics #27 and Action Comics #1 sold for just 10 cents.
