Seven Dublin hospitals will face major disruption next month as the SIPTU trade union has today served them with notice of a 48-hour strike beginning on 7 April.
The seven hospitals affected are St James, St Vincents, Connolly Memorial, Mater, Beaumont, Tallaght and St Colmcille’s in Loughlinstown.
Some 4,500 SIPTU members, comprising support staff such as porters, catering personnel, security, health care assistants and supervisors, will withdraw their labour from 1am on Wednesday 7 April until 1am on Friday, 9 April.
Low-level action is also anticipated for ambulance services in Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow.
SIPTU Health Sector Organiser Paul Bell said the planned strike action is in response to the refusal of the hospital managements to honour the terms of the ‘Towards 2016 Transitional Agreement 2008’, or to agree an alternative agreement, and over their threat to outsource the jobs of union members.
The strike also forms part of SIPTU’s engagement with the ongoing campaign of industrial action in the public service.
Bell said that other hospitals in Dublin will have disputes in the weeks to follow and action in acute hospitals will be rolled out in the regions.
Hospitals not on strike in Dublin are organising a solidarity fund to support striking workers, he added.
Bell also said that strike notice period being served on the hospitals allows the employers ample time to engage in meaningful dialogue with SIPTU on the issues in dispute.
