The President of Toyota Motor Corporation Akio Toyoda has publicly apologised to customers for the recall of millions of the company’s cars worldwide over concerns about a sticking accelerator pedal.
Toyoda made the apology at a press conference in Nagoya, Japan - his first public appearance since the recall crisis hit the world’s largest car maker.
Toyoda (53), the grandson of the company’s founder, said he was “deeply sorry” for the recall.
He also appealed directly to customers, telling them: “Believe me, Toyota cars are safe.”
The company has so recalled over eight million cars globally over pedal concerns, with 26,000 of those vehicles in Ireland.
Toyota acknowledged yesterday that the recall would end up costing it in the region of US$2bn in the year to March 2010.
However, despite the recall, the company forecast an increase in car sales for its full financial year ending 31 March.
It also reported a large profit for its third quarter, with net income rising to 153 billion yen (US$1.68bn), following a loss of 164 billion yen during the same period in 2008.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced yesterday that it is opening an investigation into brake problems with Toyota’s Prius 2010 model.
