The extent of the jobs crisis was revealed today as the latest CSO report showed 33,000 more people signing on in January than in December last.
Allowing for seasonal adjustments, the number of people signing on rose to 326,100 last month from 293,000 in December 2008, according to the Live Register report.
The unemployment rate now stands at 9.2pc up from 6.3pc in the last quarter of 2008. The figures show that the latest increase consisted of 22,900 males and 10,100 females.
