Alexandra College in Milltown in Dublin today hosted a live virtual visit to the world-famous Cern Laboratory in Geneva for over 600 primary and secondary school students.

The science event, which is the first of its kind for students in Ireland, included a demonstration by astrophysicist Dr Sofoklis Sotiriu and a live virtual tour of the Cern Laboratory, and Atlas experiment located in Cern.

“We are thrilled to host this interactive science event in Alexandra College today and share this unique learning opportunity with other Dublin schools, in particular our local national schools,” said Alexandra College principal Barbara Ennis.

“Alexandra has been pioneering science education and innovation since its foundation in 1866. The ethos of scientific innovation within the school is demonstrated through the number of science learning initiatives available to students. Today’s event is a unique opportunity for students and teachers to experience first-hand the inner workings of Cern, the world’s largest particle physics laboratory”.

Entitled ‘The Subatomic Adventure Continues… From Telescopes to Accelerators’ the event was facilitated through Alexandra College’s participation in the Open Discovery Space (ODS) EU project.

Students and teachers attended from a number of Dublin schools including St Columbas, Lucan Community School, St Michael’s College Finglas, Colaiste Eoin and Iosagain, as well as Alexandra College.

This interactive live session took students to the heart of some of the most exciting science developments and experiments in the world, including the Large Hadron Collider.
