Dublin Zoo has announced the appointment of Margaret Sinanan as the 57th president of the Zoological Society of Ireland and chair of its board.

Sinanan becomes the first woman to hold this role in the 180-year history of Dublin Zoo.  A long time member of Dublin Zoo, Sinanan became a member of the Dublin Zoo council in 1981.

Sinanan's role as president will involve ensuring quality corporate governance, promoting Dublin Zoo’s role in the conservation of wildlife and increasing the public awareness of the part the zoo plays in these endeavours.

“The management of Dublin Zoo is in the capable hands of the director, Leo Oosterweghel, and a team that numbers almost 100,” she said.  “I look forward to working alongside this dedicated team as they continue their valuable work.”

Dublin Zoo is Ireland’s most popular visitor attraction and welcomed over 1 million guests through its gates in 2011.
