The €500 banknote can no longer be bought from exchange offices in the UK due to its popularity with criminals.
This means no one can buy the note in the UK, although people carrying the notes in from abroad will be able to sell them.
According to the UK’s Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), 90pc of the €500 notes in the UK are being used by people engaged by organised crime.
The notes are beloved of criminals as they permit large amounts of money to be placed in small cases.
Soca told the BBC that the €500 note had been secretly withdrawn from sale in the UK on 20 April.
