The Tánaiste Mary Coughlan has appointed the former Attorney General and former European Commissioner David Byrne as facilitator for the development of a Code of Practice for Grocery Goods Undertakings.
The aim of the new grocery goods code of practice is to develop a fair trading relationship between retailers and their supplier.
Legislation which is currently being prepared to allow the National Consumer Agency and the Competition Authority to merge will also make it possible for statutory codes of practice to be introduced in the grocery goods sector.
This legislation is due to be published later this year and in the meantime, the Tánaiste is seeking the input of all stakeholders to hammer out a voluntary code of practice for the grocery sector.
In his role as facilitator, Byrne will meet with all grocery sector stakeholders and evaluate their suggestions for a voluntary code of practice, with the hopes of securing agreement from all parties on a draft code.
Byrne is then set to report back to the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment by early summer this year.
