Golden handshake for axed junior ministers

Categories: Leadership

It has emerged that the five Ministers of State who are to lose their positions tomorrow are set to receive a so-called ‘golden handshake’ redundancy payment worth up to €53,000 each.

According to reports in the Irish Independent this morning, the ministers are to get severance payments for two years to compensate them for loss of earnings as their salary is reduced to the €100,000 received by a backbencher.

On the eve of the supplementary budget earlier this month, the Taoiseach Brian Cowen TD announced that he intended to cut the number of Ministers of State from 20 to 15.

The 20 junior ministers currently serving are tendering their resignations today. The Taoiseach will then re-examine their roles and functions, and a reduced number of 15 will be reappointed on the 22 April.
