Poundland to create 180 retail jobs

There was a much-needed boost for the retail sector today as Poundland announced its entry in Ireland with the creation of at least 180 jobs.

The discount retailer said it will begin opening shops in Ireland from October. The stores will trade under the brand name Dealz.

The company runs 347 shops in the UK and is currently planning further expansion into Europe.

The investment is worth over €2m to the Irish economy, claims Poundland.

There will be at least six Dealz stores open by the end of March 2012 with a minimum 180 staff working in them.

The Irish shops will be led by Irish management.

Dealz is an integrated part of Poundland, with the same board and management team, led by Jim McCarthy.

The shops will be stocked with food, drink and health & beauty products. They will also have baby sectors, as well as homeware and pet sections.

Top brand names will include Colgate, Walkers, Cadbury, Maxwell House, Weightwatchers, Pantene, Kodak, Coca Cola, Kellogg’s, Fairy and Flash.

Poundland’s CEO Jim McCarthy said extensive research on the Irish market place had been carried out over the last two years. He said the company believes the time for entering the market is now right.

“We plan to support Irish suppliers by stocking locally sourced milk, eggs and many other products.  In addition to helping sustain Irish employment, we will be creating at least 180 new jobs in the Irish market place as a direct result of our expansion.”
