Reports today suggest that internet phenomenon Twitter could be on its way to Dublin after deciding to locate its European base there.
The micro-blogging site, which already has 175 million users, is looking to expand its operations and has confirmed it is “actively considering several locations” in Europe.
London has also been touted as a possible location for the company, which was valued yesterday at US$3.7bn.
On its blog today, The Guardian quoted an unnamed source stating that Twitter had already decided to set up operations in Dublin. However, the Telegraph reported meetings between Twitter executives and British prime minister David Cameron.
Twitter employs 350 people in the US.
IDA Ireland could not say whether there was interest from Twitter but conceded it was a “target company” which they would “love to see in Ireland”.
“It would be joining a strong cluster of peer companies already here,” said a spokesperson, referring to Google and Facebook, two other Internet giants who have their European bases in Dublin.
The company announced yesterday that it had raised US$200m in an signifcant funding round. Investors continue to look at Twitter in the hope of one day buying public shares in the company.
